Metaphor: ReFantazio Director Discusses Potential Sequel Plans
After winning critical acclaim and quickly becoming one of Atlus’ top sellers, Metaphor: ReFantazio seemed poised for a sequel. However, director Katsura Hashino wants to take his time before diving into any follow-up. He emphasized the importance of crafting something that reflects the values instilled in the first game rather than rushing into a sequel simply because of its success.
In a conversation with Game Informer, Hashino explained, “When we initially set out to create this game, we had the ambitions of hoping to cultivate this game into one of our brands within Atlus, like a pillar.” He sees Metaphor: ReFantazio as having the potential to stand alongside beloved franchises like Shin Megami Tensei and Persona.
He elaborated, “With that being said, just because we had a certain level of success, we don’t want to just jump on that and quickly put out something as a sequel. We want to really give it some thought and make sure that if we are able to continue on in this series, we’re putting together something that is building on the values that we were able to infuse into this game and something that would be worthwhile for the fans that would be waiting for it.”
For now, the team is focused on ensuring they’re headed in the right direction before expanding the brand further. Hashino mentioned that while they’re considering future possibilities, they’re not going to act hastily just because the first game resonated with players. “Because of that, we’re looking ahead into what we can do with this series, but we won’t want to just act on it because we had a certain level of success, if that makes sense.”
Additionally, while Hashino remains attached to the Persona series, he noted he hasn’t been “super involved” since Persona 5 Royal. As fans eagerly await news about Persona 6, developers hinted at “opportunities in 2026 to talk about future developments” for the JRPG’s 30th anniversary.
Stay tuned for updates as the future of Metaphor and its potential continuation unfolds!
