Anyone who’s ever ventured into Skyrim knows the pain of accidentally killing the infamous Riverwood chicken. Little did you know, this seemingly innocent act could land you in hot water with every NPC in town. In a recent chat with Nintendo Life, Matt Carofano, the lead artist behind Skyrim, shed some light on this unexpected consequence. “We made NPCs overreact to what you did,” he confesses. “Everyone attacks the chicken in Riverwood, which is the very first town you encounter, and then you’re wanted. There’s no escaping it.”
Carofano shares that this moment has become a memorable highlight for the team, albeit without any initial intent. “We talk about that moment a lot because it’s fun and funny, but it just sort of happened since we made it a crime to attack the chicken. The chicken is essentially part of the town’s faction, so naturally, the townspeople defend it,” he explains. “It started out unintentional and turned out to be a bit humorous, though maybe somewhat punitive, too.” This led the team to think about the balance of risk and reward in the game – after all, it’s an open-world experience.
“We discussed how much freedom we wanted to allow players and how quickly we could reset things,” Carofano reflects on Skyrim’s immersive and reactive world, which, for him, is a key part of its charm. “To me, it’s about showing up somewhere and seeing the game’s systems interacting in unexpected ways.” He wraps up with a memorable example: “You might have a giant attacking something, then monsters join in, and suddenly a dragon appears, and you think, ‘This isn’t what we planned for,’ but somehow, it turns out to be a blast.”
As a longtime fan of the series, I can’t help but hope that Elder Scrolls 6 maintains this lively essence. Still, it makes you wonder whether Riverwood’s NPCs really had to go all out over a chicken. If they hadn’t, we might not have one of the community’s greatest memes, and after a solid 14 years, it’s safe to say this nugget of humor isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. So remember, fellow adventurers – if you spot a chicken in Skyrim, maybe just keep walking.
Skyrim’s Switch 2 port has also been a hot topic lately, with players expressing frustration over “horrendous” input lag that makes the RPG feel practically unplayable.
