Shawn Layden Defends Exclusives in Gaming’s Evolving Landscape
Shawn Layden, the former head of Sony Interactive Entertainment, recently shared his thoughts on the increasingly rare phenomenon of full-on exclusive games during an appearance on the Pause for Thought podcast. Leading Sony through the successful PS4 era, Layden weighed in on how platform holders are adapting their strategies with first-party titles.
“I don’t think every game has to be console exclusive,” he noted. “But I do accept the fact that if you’re going to have platform companies, like Sony and Nintendo—Microsoft is more about ‘Xbox is everywhere’—there’s significant value in having strong exclusives.”
Layden’s comments echo a growing debate within the industry. While some, including Xbox President, have labeled exclusive games as “antiquated,” suggesting that franchises like Call of Duty, Minecraft, Roblox, and Fortnite dominate the gaming community, others maintain that exclusives play a crucial role in platform identity. “If Mario starts appearing on PlayStation, that’s the apocalypse, right? Cats and dogs living together,” Layden quipped, alluding to the cultural significance of iconic characters. “They make the platforms sing.”
He further cautioned that multiplatform games often “code to the lowest denominator,” and pointed out that exclusives provide the freedom to truly maximize a platform’s capabilities, or as he put it, to “push every lever to 11.”
The discussion comes at a pivotal time when Xbox is shifting many of its former exclusives to compete with other consoles, while PlayStation seems to be extending some titles like Helldivers 2 and Lego Horizon Adventures to Microsoft and Nintendo. Notably, most PS5 exclusives also make their way to PC after some time—yet Nintendo remains steadfast in keeping its beloved IPs close to home.
In wrapping up his thoughts, Layden remarked, “I think there will be some exclusive titles still in the future, but if you’re looking for a massive multiplayer experience, you almost have to go multiplatform to open that funnel as wide as possible. Especially with free-to-play models.”
