It’s hard not to chuckle at how many times Skyrim has made its comeback—it’s basically the running joke in gaming now.
Just when folks thought Bethesda might finally hang up the Skyrim boots, the classic RPG has made its way to the Nintendo Switch 2. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim – Anniversary Edition was surprisingly released yesterday on the new console, and, let’s be real, it’s yet another iteration of Skyrim.
In a chat with Nintendo Life, Matt Carofano, the lead artist for Skyrim, shared insights about this re-release. He expressed, “We’re huge fans of Nintendo, love working with them and getting our games to their consoles. And with the new console, it’s like, ‘Hey, let’s bring back one of our most beloved games to the Switch 2 and see how we can enhance it and create the best experience for that platform.’”
He further commented, “There’s a whole new generation who might be picking up a Switch 2 for the first time, and that’s their first introduction to Skyrim. So that’s what it’s all about.”
However, with Skyrim now joining the ranks of iconic titles like Resident Evil 4, Rayman 2, and Street Fighter 2 in the ‘endless re-release club’, many fans were taken aback that Bethesda has pulled off yet another successful launch. Carofano went on to say, “It’s a bit of a joke at this point how often we release Skyrim, but it’s a great game. We want everyone to experience it in the best way possible.”
Considering that The Elder Scrolls 6 seems to be an eternity away, there’s a good chance that we’ll continue to see newer versions of Skyrim popping up. Just last month, the NEX Playground outsold the PS5 for a week, and you can bet Bethesda is already strategizing for the future.
Meanwhile, Todd Howard half-jokingly mused that he thinks GTA 6 will drop before The Elder Scrolls 6, lauding Rockstar as “some of the absolute best” in terms of world design.
