Bruce Nesmith, the lead designer behind Skyrim, has some thoughts on the reception of Bethesda’s latest title, Starfield. In a recent conversation with Press Box PR, he hinted that if Starfield had been developed by a different studio, it might be hailed as “the second coming.” However, the weight of high expectations from players, often associated with the Bethesda name, seems to have shifted the game’s perception.
“Bethesda’s in the bad position of having expectations being so high they cannot be met,” Nesmith remarked. He emphasized the importance of managing expectations, something he believes is crucial for any effective marketing team. “Let’s assume that a new studio had put out Starfield. I suspect it would be talked about like the second coming. But because it was released by Bethesda, the expectations were so much higher that it was seen differently. Starfield is a good game. It’s a very good game. It’s just not the game that people expected it to be,” he added.
Nesmith, who left the company during Starfield’s development, approached the game from a player’s perspective. “I played that game all the way to the bitter end and I have thoughts and I have concerns but I played it to the bitter end and therefore that’s a win for Bethesda.” Despite his minor issues with the game, he noted that Starfield “felt very natural” for the studio. He expressed optimism about a potential sequel, stating that he’s “betting” the next installment will “knock that out of the park,” as the team will have the opportunity to build on their initial efforts.
As the gaming community continues to discuss the dynamics of player expectations and developer capabilities, Nesmith’s insights highlight a critical conversation about the pressures faced by iconic studios like Bethesda.
