Throughout gaming history, many real-life individuals have been incorporated into video games, yet few have embarked on the journey of creating personal self-insert mods that authentically place themselves into their beloved titles. Among these enthusiasts is modder, game enthusiast, Twitch streamer, and Skyrim devotee Orcpics, who has achieved this by utilizing a detailed 3D scan of himself.
This impressive feat was first highlighted in the Skyrim community via a post on Reddit, where Orcpics unveiled his creation of a mod that integrates his 3D scan into Bethesda’s legendary RPG as a unique armor set. This armor can be donned by either NPCs or his own character, allowing a personalized twist as they are dressed as a pixelated version of the modder himself. “I knew just the NPC for the job,” Orcpics remarked, recalling his plan for a grand spectacle. He expressed his intention to record a scene where he would decapitate himself in-game, and chose Heimskr, known for his incessant chatter and fervor at Whiterun’s Talos Shrine, as the perfect accomplice for this endeavor.
Unique Mods in Skyrim
The innovative nature of modding in Skyrim does not stop there. Players have crafted various imaginative mods, such as:
- A player marrying a dragon, redefining what it means to be the “Dragonborn” and leading to a buggy experience reminiscent of Oblivion.
- One Oblivion Remastered player who endured 100 hours spamming the game’s most basic spell in the swamps, pursuing a childhood challenge.
- A modder who embraced the aesthetics of Mirror’s Edge, introducing a sleek new parkour system that has revived the stealth archer playthrough trend.
Creating the Mod
Reflecting on the time spent on the project, Orcpics shared in a Reddit reply, “It was definitely time-consuming, but this is my first experience making a Skyrim mod, so I had to learn everything from scratch. The mod consists of a custom helmet and torso armor, so for those with experience in modding these elements, it shouldn’t be overly complex.” Despite this being his inaugural Skyrim mod, Orcpics has previously worked on other projects.
A recent video shared on Twitter and YouTube showcases similar gameplay segments in both Lethal Company and Dark Souls Remastered, illustrating a variety of low-resolution Orcpics characters alongside a legion of undead foes swapped for his hooded avatar.
In his post, Orcpics humorously commented, “This is how I like to show off my cameras,” indicating that the video begins with a brief display of his diverse camera collection, which was digitally replicated through 3D scanning. Inspired by this tech, he wondered why not take the leap and 3D scan himself to insert his character into various games? “It’s like acquiring a panini press. You’ve got this nifty kitchen gadget, so you better find creative uses for it. I’ll panini press just about anything—sandwiches, frozen waffles, even my freshly laundered clothes. 3D scanning myself into Dark Souls is a walk in the park compared to that!”
“I don’t know why I subject myself to this level of torture,” he said, referencing the persistence of the Oblivion Remastered player.
