In a recent development, the director of Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic has addressed rumors suggesting the game won’t be released until 2030. Announced at The Game Awards 2025, this title is generating considerable excitement, as it serves as a “spiritual successor” rather than a direct sequel to the beloved Knights of the Old Republic series, helmed by the Mass Effect trilogy’s director, Casey Hudson.
However, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier took to social media to comment on the timeline of the game’s release, stating, “Lucasfilm says the studio was founded this year, which means that 2030 is an *optimistic* guess. Maybe it’ll be a PlayStation 7 game.”
Following the buzz surrounding the game’s potential distant release, Casey Hudson himself stepped in to quell the speculation. He tweeted, “Don’t worry about the ‘not till 2030’ rumors. Game will be out before then. I’m not getting any younger!”
Hudson detailed that Fate of the Old Republic offers a chance to create a modern vision of an ultimate Star Wars experience. He noted that the game will leverage cutting-edge technology and design, featuring a fresh story tailored to enhance player immersion and agency—elements that defined KOTOR’s charm. This ambitious project is being developed by the newly-formed Arcanaut Studios, where Hudson serves as CEO.
As of now, specifics about the release window remain scarce, and there’s no word yet on which platforms the game will be available. Hudson has confidently linked the essence of Fate of the Old Republic to the magic of the original KOTOR franchise, stating that nearly two decades later, the upcoming title is a love letter to what made it so special.
