The much-anticipated open-world survival game Terminator: Survivors has officially been pushed back beyond 2025, as developer Nacon Studio Milan announces significant changes to its development. In a recent update shared on Steam, the title’s trajectory seems to have shifted rather dramatically, sparking concerns among fans. Let’s be real: when a game developer drops a post titled “what’s next,” it’s typically not a good omen. Especially when the game was initially set for release in 2024, then again in 2025, and now… crickets.
The most discouraging news here is the delayed timeline—it’s no longer slated for 2025, and there’s been no new date offered in its place. The reasons behind this holdup are a bit murky, but it appears the project simply requires more time to mature. Adding to the disappointment, the game is dropping its co-op component to focus solely on single-player gameplay. Regarding this pivot, Nacon stated:
“After months of internal testing and discussions with players and fans of the license, we came to the conclusion that to give you an authentic ‘Terminator’ experience with the best possible shooting and exploration gameplay, we would have to put aside the cooperative multiplayer. We know this may come as a disappointment, but we believe it is the right creative direction for an uncompromising vision of the world after Judgment Day.”
In an additional twist, Nacon has decided to forgo the previously planned early access phase for Terminator: Survivors. They want “your first steps into the wasteland to be a complete and polished experience.”
So, what can players expect? The game is now a single-player first-person open-world survival experience set in the harrowing aftermath of Judgment Day but preceding John Connor’s human resistance. It’s a pretty grim time to be a human, it seems.
“You’ll be immersed in a bleak story where every machine patrolling the open world is a lethal threat, and the chilling sight of a T-800’s red eyes on the horizon means you run, you hide, or you die…” the official description teases. “Your journey will be one of desperation, as you explore, fight Skynet’s first prototypes, and help the resistance rise from the ashes of civilization. This isn’t just another shooter. It’s a fight for the survival of all humanity from the moment you step out of the rubble. The start of the resistance against the machines, as seen through your eyes.”
