Quest 64 Gets an Impressive PC Remaster Thanks to Fan Recompilation Efforts
The Nintendo 64 has a reputation for being devoid of traditional role-playing games, especially when compared to the explosion of JRPGs making waves on the PlayStation during the era of Final Fantasy 7. If there’s one game that stands as the N64’s most recognizable RPG, it’s Quest 64. While it hasn’t always been treated kindly, fans are rallying for a full recompilation, aiming to breathe new life into this long-maligned title.
Fans have taken to decompilation projects, dissecting the game’s code to dig into its inner workings. Recompilation is where the magic happens — taking that disassembled code and reconstructing it in a way that allows it to run on contemporary hardware. We’ve seen this approach yield remarkable results for beloved N64 classics like Super Mario 64, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and Star Fox 64, each of which has received a polished PC remaster boasting modern controller support, 60 FPS gameplay, and an array of visual and gameplay enhancements.
Now, add Quest 64 to that impressive list. According to a report from Read Only Memo, the recompilation efforts for Quest 64 have progressed to a point where players can now experience the game at a smooth 60 FPS. Although this version is still in beta and is circulated primarily among a small Discord community of fans, it’s already fully playable from beginning to end. Speedrunners have even begun showcasing their runs of the remastered version!
Of course, we can’t pretend that Quest 64 holds a candle to the likes of Mario, Zelda, or Star Fox. It has its dedicated fans — a special shoutout to Quest 64 Official, one of the few shining lights in the sometimes bleak landscape of social media. Unfortunately, the game was met with poor reviews at launch and ultimately became emblematic of the N64’s struggles with RPGs. Defenders of the game often argue that its expansive world and minimal storytelling should be viewed as just minor distractions from its innovative battle system and unique magic mechanics.
The debate over whether Quest 64 is actually a good game may linger for years, but one thing is for sure: with this recompilation, it’s going to be a whole lot easier to explore the game’s merits without the limitations of N64 hardware.
