Despite over a decade passing since the last true entry in the Fallout saga, and with Fallout 5 still hidden in the shadows, Bethesda’s Todd Howard has spilled some intriguing beans about unannounced Fallout projects currently underway. Bethesda has a knack for crafting incredible universes, yet it might be best to temper expectations regarding any sequels. With the studio seemingly focused on one game at a time and juggling three expansive franchises—Elder Scrolls, Fallout, and Starfield—the wait could stretch out for a bit. Plus, fans have been feeling the pinch of new Fallout content, especially with the surge in popularity of the Fallout television series that has yet to spawn new gaming content to ride the wave.
In a conversation with GameInformer, Howard acknowledges that while Fallout 5 might seem like a distant dream, “Fallout as a franchise is the one that we’re still doing the most work in above anything.” This certainly hints at projects related to the TV series, but Howard teases that there are also gaming ventures on the horizon: “Now, the majority of our internal team is on Elder Scrolls VI. We are doing other things with Fallout that we haven’t announced, and there’ll come a time for that.”
As fans voiced their disappointment over Fallout 5’s absence during the Fallout Day broadcast, Howard reassured enthusiasts that Bethesda continues to “work on even more.” In a bit of candidness, he remarked on the mixed reception of Fallout 76, stating, “we’ve never stopped developing Fallout; we’ve had a full team on it for a long time.” Nonetheless, it’s apparent that the bulk of the community is yearning for another single-player adventure in the spirit of the main series.
Considering the critical and commercial success of Baldur’s Gate 3 and the explosive popularity of the TV series, there’s a glimmer of hope for a fresh team to explore the CRPG style reminiscent of the original Fallout games before Bethesda took the reins. But for now, it’s hard not to feel a bit skeptical about any major releases materializing soon.
