Okami Sequel Update: A Message from Clovers CEO Kento Koyama
In an exciting yet cautious update for fans, Clovers CEO Kento Koyama has shared that the sequel to the beloved Capcom classic, Okami, won’t be arriving any time soon. It’s been nearly 18 years since the original PS2 title made its debut—now a staple across multiple platforms—and the announcement for a sequel made waves back in 2024.
This highly anticipated follow-up, led by the original director Hideki Kamiya, marks a significant first for him as he takes on directing a sequel to his own game. However, news has been a bit sparse since that initial buzz. As we step into 2025, Koyama and Kamiya have taken to the Clovers website to reflect on the journey of developing the game and what the new year holds.
In a statement, Kamiya shared, “Our team kicked off 2025 with the excitement of the Okami sequel project’s announcement still fresh in our minds. We’ve had our noses to the grindstone so thoroughly that before we knew it, another year has passed us by.” He further elaborated on Clovers’ rapid growth, from “a handful of us sharing a cramped rental office” to “a fully-fledged studio with offices in Tokyo and Osaka.”
Koyama chimed in with enthusiasm, stating, “We are hard at work on the Okami sequel. Although the release is still a ways off, we cannot wait to get the finished game into your hands.” He emphasized their commitment to excellence: “We will continue to work tirelessly this year to deliver an experience that surpasses the expectations of players all over the world.”
With Capcom gearing up for a packed launch schedule this year—including titles like Resident Evil Village, Monster Hunter Stories 3, Pragmata, and Onimusha: Way of the Sword—it might be a while before we hear more about the Okami sequel. But given Kamiya’s flawless track record for directing outstanding games, our excitement remains high. If history serves us right, this sequel will be worth the wait.
