Can you believe it’s already been over a decade since Warframe first dropped in 2013? Time really flies! This week, though, things are looking brighter than ever for the free-to-play online shooter. With the rollout of the latest update, The Old Peace, the game’s concurrent player numbers on Steam have shot up, nearing its all-time high. And honestly, it’s pretty easy to see why. Every time new content arrives, it tends to draw in both new and returning players, but even the team at Digital Extremes seemed surprised by the influx this time around. Creative director Rebecca Ford took to Twitter to share a player graph, remarking, “we are doing our best out here to keep things alive but we were not expecting this much of a jump.”
Support from Steam analytics site SteamDB backs up Ford’s observations, with player counts hitting a peak of just over 175,000 on December 10, the day of the update’s launch. To put that into perspective, the last time Warframe saw these kinds of numbers was back in mid-2021, when it recorded just under 190,000 concurrent players.
But it’s really more than just the numbers that tell the story of Warframe’s resurgence. The game has undergone consistent updates and improvements, demonstrating just how dedicated Digital Extremes is to its player base. What started as a game about ninjas in space has evolved into something much richer. This evolution was highlighted at The Game Awards when the team presented a trailer featuring a compelling narrative, even with the legendary Werner Herzog trying to encapsulate what Warframe is all about. As Twitch streamer DansGaming pointed out on Twitter, “The game is blowing up not only because it’s still one of the best F2P games with a fascinating story and very generous monetization. The dev team has been really amping up quality of life upgrades into every patch over the last few years.”
Looking ahead, there’s even more buzz around what 2026 could bring for Warframe. Digital Extremes has teased that The Old Peace is just the beginning of a massive narrative transformation in the works for next year. With the player count record from 2021 potentially under threat, it seems like Warframe is poised for an even brighter future.
How do you make a complex MMO welcoming for newcomers? According to the Warframe devs, it’s all about perseverance: “I don’t think we’ve ever quite got that 100% right.”
