A prominent developer associated with The Witcher 4 has expressed a strong sense of assurance regarding the upcoming title, attributing it to CD Projekt Red’s significant role in the franchise’s success. In a conversation with PC Gamer, Marcin Blacha, who was the lead writer for The Witcher 3 and is returning for The Witcher 4, shared that this confidence is derived from CDPR’s well-established legacy within the series: “It’s a very well-established franchise. People love it, we know how to handle it. I’m pretty confident about The Witcher 4.”
While acknowledging that they did not originate the character Geralt or the universe he inhabits, Blacha noted that, “we made [the franchise] popular through the games.”
Emotional Depth and Player Choices
Reflecting on the past, he mentioned that the studio lacked the same level of recognition earlier in their journey, but now he feels that the series has significantly influenced his growth, stating that it has “shaped me in a way that I became confident about it…and it doesn’t make me anxious anymore. It just goes on.”
Blacha remarked, “And it’s a nice feeling because I know that I created something big, and probably I will be remembered because of it.”
Author’s Perspective
The sentiments of The Witcher creator, Andrzej Sapkowski, regarding Blacha’s assertions about the game’s recognition remain ambiguous; however, he has historically seemed content with both CD Projekt’s adaptations and the Netflix series. It’s evident that The Witcher series might have remained a niche success in Poland without the overwhelming global appeal fostered by the game trilogy.
Looking Ahead with Cautious Optimism
Despite the rocky launch of Cyberpunk 2077, Blacha’s confidence offers a sense of comfort as the development of The Witcher 4 progresses. Although CD Projekt Red has worked hard to reshape the narrative surrounding Cyberpunk 2077, it is unlikely that ‘confidence’ characterized the developers’ mindset during the tumultuous weeks leading up to that release. Nevertheless, with lessons learned from previous challenges, it appears that a similar ordeal is unlikely for The Witcher 4.
Moreover, CD Projekt Red officials have suggested that Ciri is an excellent choice as a central character in The Witcher 4, as she opens up exciting new avenues for the franchise following more than a decade of RPGs.
