The Ongoing AI Debate in Game Development: Insights from The Astronauts CEO

Adrian Chmielarz, the CEO of The Astronauts—known for the acclaimed walking simulator The Vanishing of Ethan Carter and the upcoming fantasy shooter Witchfire—recently weighed in on the ongoing discussions surrounding Larian Studios’ exploration of generative AI. Just a few weeks ago, Larian’s CEO Swen Vincke stirred up controversy when he mentioned that the studio was investigating the use of generative AI during the early stages of production on Divinity. He later clarified that no AI-generated assets would be included when the RPG launches, emphasizing that its developers would only use AI for preliminary ideas and that they had no intention of replacing human creatives.

Despite these reassurances, the backlash from the gaming community persisted, with many raising concerns about the ethical implications and environmental impact of generative AI, whether or not it ends up in the final game.

Chmielarz spoke with TechRaptor and suggested that Larian simply “got a little bit unlucky” with how the situation unfolded. “I think that Larian is definitely not evil,” he remarked. He acknowledged the introspection the studio seems to be undergoing, stating, “They’re doing deep soul searching of what exactly this will mean for Larian going forward, and we’ll see what happens.” Interestingly, Chmielarz made it clear that The Astronauts are not using generative AI in the development of Witchfire. While he admitted to using AI tools to refine his placeholder text due to language barriers, he firmly stated that AI hasn’t made its way into any other aspect of the fantasy shooter.

He also offered a thoughtful perspective on the worries surrounding AI in game development, expressing appreciation for the passion people have regarding the origins of their art. “They want to have contact with other humans through art,” he noted, highlighting the fundamental connection people seek.

As the conversation around generative AI in game development continues to unfold, it’s clear that there are varied opinions within the industry. The balancing act between innovation and ethical considerations remains a hot topic that will likely shape the future landscape of gaming.
