Pinball FX VR has officially launched, and we recently had the opportunity to experience it firsthand during a live stream, exploring the arcade and checking out the exciting new tables introduced by Zen Studios.
Upon purchasing the game, players receive three tables, but it’s important to note that previously acquired Zen Pinball tables will not carry over into this version.
The initial offering includes the classic tables: Pinball Noir, Curse of the Mummy, and Sky Pirates: Treasures of the Clouds, available in both virtual and mixed reality modes.
All other tables viewers may have seen in promotional materials prior to the release will be available as paid DLC. Acquiring the full set can become quite costly, as highlighted in our detailed review. Starting at $9.99 USD for the base game, the total could rise to an eye-watering $79.93 if you aim to collect every currently released table.
We invite you to check out our stream above for gameplay insights in VR, mixed reality, and on a physical X-Arcade cabinet. Additionally, we discuss DIY pinball and arcade input solutions at home. If you’ve created your own arcade cabinet for VR, feel free to reach out at [email protected].
Since we weren’t able to showcase all tables during our live stream, we compiled a list featuring detailed videos of each table as viewed through a Quest 3 headset, letting prospective pinball enthusiasts get a clear idea of the immersive 3D experience, even giving you the chance to explore beneath the tables.
Tables Included in the Base Game
Here are the three tables included with the initial $9.99 purchase of Pinball FX VR.
Sky Pirates
Sky Pirates: Treasures of the Clouds challenges players with a vibrant table featuring various airships and colorful graphics. The experience is amplified by the humorous Sky Pirate firing his cannon while environmental effects like sparkling treasure trails and animated battles fill the skies, merging adventure with classic pinball play.
Curse Of The Mummy
This striking table is centered around a waterfall feature, with environmental effects creating an eerily mystical ambiance. Playing alongside a life-sized mummy, who glows ominously green with each lost ball, enhances the thrill and connection to the game.
Pinball Noir
Pinball Noir features a design inspired by a gritty, rain-soaked urban environment. With cabinet graphics depicting vintage cars, shadowy figures, and glimmering neon lights, the atmosphere is heightened with animated rain, flashing streetlights, and a semi-monochromatic detective lurking beside the table, shaping a dark and moody scene.
Universal Pinball: TV Classics
This DLC is currently the only true combination pack available in the game, retailing for $14.99. Zen Studios collaborated with Universal Studios to create three tables themed around beloved sci-fi and fantasy television shows.
Xena: Warrior Princess
As this table initiates, players are welcomed by the show’s legendary opening monologue voiced by the iconic Don LaFontaine, known as the “King of the Movie Trailers.” The table immerses players in the rich lore of Xena, showcasing vibrant visuals and an upper track, while thematic elements from the beloved ’90s series highlight intense pinball combat. Environmental effects present animated skirmishes, clashing sword sounds, and atmospheric chants.
Knight Rider
This elegantly designed table brings to life visuals inspired by the famous K.I.T.T. car. Players enjoy rapid animations and recognizable sound effects that enhance the gaming experience. Beyond the table action, K.I.T.T. navigates a track surrounding the player, placing them directly at the center of the excitement.
Battlestar Galactica
Catering to fans of the 2004 reboot of Glen A. Larson’s classic ’70s space saga, this table is a visual delight with the formidable Galactica dominating the surface as it’s relentlessly pursued by an ever-looming Cylon Basestar. The aesthetic remains true to the show, and the incorporated audio snippets provide great fan service. “Roll the hard six” nods to the phrase, “All of this has happened before. All of this will happen again.” So say we all.
Williams Pinball
In partnership with Williams, Zen is offering four well-known tables, with each priced at $9.99.
World Cup Soccer
The Williams Pinball World Cup Soccer table features a lively soccer-themed cabinet backdrop. Scoring goals activates special features such as multiball and skill-shot opportunities, enhancing the competitive thrill between player and machine. Bright, colorful artwork and a full-sized soccer-playing mascot beside the table draw in both pinball lovers and soccer enthusiasts.
Twilight Zone
Welcome to a dimension of sight, sound, and mind with the Twilight Zone table, which provides both fan service and fast-paced pinball action. The table includes numerous easter eggs from the iconic sci-fi classic, along with memorable audio clips from various episodes of the long-running series. With a door in the center seemingly opening into another dimension and a life-sized robot companion standing watch beside the table, Twilight Zone fans won’t want to miss this visually stunning and entertaining addition to their collection.
The Addams Family
This table invites players into the quirky yet spooky realm of The Addams Family. With animated characters like Cousin Itt standing nearby and Thing crawling across the surface, the graphics resonate with the series’ vibe. Coupled with dynamic screen animations and humorous audio clips, it offers a remarkable virtual pinball experience, especially for fans of the Addams Family franchise.
Star Trek: The Next Generation
As a devoted Star Trek fan, I can say without a doubt that the “must-have” table for me in this collection is Star Trek: The Next Generation! Bursting with fan service, featuring the iconic main theme and classic quotes from beloved characters throughout gameplay, this visually spectacular table showcases a detailed model of the Enterprise NCC-1701-D battling Romulan Warbirds, Cardassian Galor-class cruisers, and Klingon Birds of Prey. Players will also discover hidden treasures within the cabinet graphics. Whether you’re a longtime fan or just a passionate pinball player, there’s much to love here.
Indiana Jones: The Pinball Adventure
The iconic Indiana Jones: The Pinball Adventure table wraps up the available DLC offerings. While priced at $14.99, making it one of the pricier standalone DLCs, it features a life-sized Indy beside you, whip in hand, as you immerse yourself in the gameplay. Fans of the franchise should consider this a must-have addition.
