Sony has announced a price hike for the PS5 console in regions such as Europe, Australia, and New Zealand, while simultaneously lowering the cost of the disc drive accessory.
In continental Europe, the new price for the PS5 Digital Edition stands at €500, an increase from its previous price of €450. Meanwhile, in the UK, it will now be priced at £430, up from £390. Elsewhere in these locations, the PS5 with a disc drive retains its existing price point, but the cost of the disc drive add-on has been decreased to €80 in Europe and £70 in the UK.
Australian consumers will see the price of the PS5 Digital Edition rise to A$750, while the PS5 with a disc drive will now cost A$830. In New Zealand, the cost of the PS5 Digital Edition and the version with a disc drive has been raised to NZ$860 and NZ$950 respectively, with the price of the disc drive add-on being lowered to A$125 or NZ$140.
According to Sony, they attribute these increases to “a challenging economic environment, including high inflation and fluctuating exchange rates” source.
As for the PlayStation VR2, however, Sony has not raised its price. In fact, last month saw a significant reduction, with the headset now retailing for $400 in the US, €450 in Europe, £400 in the UK, A$650 in Australia, and NZ$750 in New Zealand.
Ultimately, for consumers in Europe and Australasia, the aggregate price of purchasing both a PS5 and the VR headset has seen an increase as of today.
