The visionary behind Deadly Premonition, SWERY, is convinced that VR is poised to become “the next major computing platform” extending beyond just gaming.
In a recent interview regarding Death Game Hotel, Hidetaka ‘SWERY’ Suehiro, the CEO of White Owls, expressed his insights about the future trajectory of VR technology. He emphasized the necessity for hardware and software to evolve in harmony, predicting a shift from cumbersome headsets to more streamlined and portable devices.
“If that happens, VR could replace things like traditional monitors, TVs, and even car mirrors. It could integrate with public transit systems, display traffic signs, or show real-time congestion data. It has the potential to reshape how we interact with the world,” stated Suehiro.
On the software front, Suehiro envisions the emergence of “an entirely new kind of operating system” tailored for wearable VR and MR technologies. He believes this advancement could facilitate “fully seamless integration between immersive experiences, real-world enhancements, and even casual games” that could be played in your peripheral vision.
“Ultimately, I believe VR won’t just be a peripheral for gaming. It’s becoming the next major computing platform, much like smartphones did. We’re already starting to see signs of this, and as devices become lighter and networks faster, the question won’t be “what can you do in VR?” but rather “what can’t you do?”
Suehiro’s insights come in the wake of our recent discussion about Death Game Hotel, a social VR horror game with a gambling theme, which is set to transition to a free-to-play model next month. Initially released last year as a premium game, White Owls announced the shift to a freemium approach on April 10. You can read our full interview below to discover more about the upcoming changes.
