Drawing inspiration from classics like Star Fox and Ikaruga, The Phoenix Gene is an exciting new third-person on-rails shooter arriving on Quest this spring.
Created by HEROmation, this marks the studio’s first venture into VR, having spent over three years in development. Players will take on the role of Firestorm, a phoenix dedicated to safeguarding a young janitor named Jackie, who finds herself targeted by her employer’s Life Rite following a mishap involving an immortality serum. You can check out the latest teaser trailer.
The narrative unfolds across eight unique multiverse realms and alternate timelines, where Firestorm intervenes to prevent the corporation from uncovering the mysteries of immortality, all while Jackie navigates her newly acquired abilities. HEROmation describes the gameplay as a blend of “intense action with strategic elements inspired by renowned titles like Pistol Whip, Star Fox, and Ikaruga.”
Players will control the phoenix through various landscapes, utilizing Touch Controllers to dodge enemy hazards and engage adversaries. Similar to Ikaruga, switching between worlds allows players to absorb incoming enemy fire while uncovering hidden collectibles. Notably, the game boasts no traditional HUD, featuring upgrades for abilities such as smart bombs, flamethrowers, and health boosts by collecting floating gold flames scattered throughout the levels.
HEROmation also intends to broaden the narrative with a unique ‘VR Book Experience,’ granting access to the initial novel in an anticipated six-book series related to the game. Additionally, it’s been announced that the soundtrack will be composed by Grant Kirkhope, renowned for his work on beloved titles like Mario + Rabbids, GoldenEye 007, and Banjo-Kazooie.
The Phoenix Gene is set to launch on the Meta Quest platform this spring.
