The PlayStation VR 2 Sold Better At Launch Than Original PSVR

The PlayStation VR 2 has quietly made its way into the market, first available directly through Sony before being stocked by major retailers in May. Despite the quiet launch, the PSVR 2 has managed to outsell its predecessor, the original PSVR, in its first six weeks of launch according to sales numbers provided by Sony in an investor update. In the update, Sony revealed that the PSVR 2 sold 600,000 units in its first six weeks, a figure that beats the PSVR’s launch sales by 8%. It’s worth noting that Sony initially sold the headset exclusively through its own storefront before opening up to retailers like Amazon and Best Buy over two months after launch.

An early report had suggested that the PSVR 2 was not selling well, but it seems as though the headset has ended up selling around double what was estimated by Bloomberg analysts. It’s unclear whether Sony managed to ship the two million units it aimed to sell in the PSVR’s launch quarter. Regardless, the PSVR 2 has received praise from reviewers who note significant refinements and improvements over the original model. Nonetheless, virtual reality remains a niche offering within the gaming world and the PSVR 2, like other headsets, still suffers from a relative lack of software options. Sony teased a number of upcoming games for the PSVR 2 during their presentation, including an updated version of Beat Saber, Resident Evil 4, PSVR 2 exclusive Synapse, and more.
