Stellaris: How to Utilize Jump Drives for Faster Travel
As you progress in Stellaris, the scale of the game expands. Your once small empire now spans across vast distances in the galaxy. With this expansion comes the need to send your assets to different locations quickly and efficiently. Whether it’s defending against pirates or aiding your allies, you’ll find yourself facing multiple threats at once.
Fortunately, there is a solution to this problem: Jump Drive technology. By utilizing Jump Drives, your ships can bypass the traditional hyperlane network and instantly jump across vast distances in space.
How to Use Jump Drives in Stellaris
The traditional method of traveling in Stellaris is by using the hyperlane network. However, this can be time-consuming, especially when you need to send your ships to multiple locations. Jump Drives offer a much faster alternative.
To use Jump Drives, follow these steps:
- Select the initiate jump icon in the fleet control interface
- Choose your destination
- Your fleets will instantly jump to their target
Before you can use Jump Drives, you must first unlock the technology and install them on your ships. Once installed, the initiate jump icon will be available in the fleet control interface.
Unlocking Jump Drive Technology
There are two ways to unlock Jump Drive technology in Stellaris:
- Research one of the two jump drive technologies in the late game: “Jump Drive” physics tech or “Psi Jump Drive” society tech.
- Start the game with jump drive technology already unlocked by using the First Contact DLC.
While there is a danger warning associated with jump drive technologies, the risks are minimal compared to the benefits. Dangerous technologies increase the likelihood of triggering the end-game crisis, but this crisis will occur regardless. Therefore, feel free to make use of jump drives without worry.
If you start the game with jump drives unlocked, be aware that it will make the game more challenging. You will have fewer pops, no military ships unlocked, and no access to the hyperlane network.
Initiating a Tactical Jump
In Stellaris, the use of jump drive technology is referred to as making a tactical jump. Once your ships have jump drives installed, you can initiate a jump by following these steps:
- Click the initiate jump button in the fleet control interface.
- A yellow circle will appear around the selected ships, indicating the range of the jump.
- Select your target system on the galaxy map.
- Your ships will initiate the jump and arrive at their destination instantly.
It’s important to note that after making a jump, there is a cooldown period of 200 in-game days before your ships can make another jump. During this cool-down period, your ships will experience reduced sublight speed and weapon damage, so plan accordingly.
