Totally Killer will be streaming on Prime Video starting October 6th. This review is part of IGN’s coverage of Fantastic Fest 2023.
Kiernan Shipka Returns in “Totally Killer” on Prime Video
Kiernan Shipka, known for her roles in Riverdale and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, is back portraying an annoyed teenager ready to take on a deranged serial killer and 1980s culture in Prime Video’s latest offering, Totally Killer. Directed by Nahnatchka Khan, known for their work on Always Be My Maybe and Fresh Off the Boat, the film combines elements of Scream and Disney Channel Original Movies, creating a unique and captivating viewing experience that shouldn’t be missed.
Shipka plays Jamie Hughes, a typical teenage girl who wants her mother, Pam Hughes (played by Julie Bowen), to relax a bit. However, Pam’s overbearing tendencies can be attributed to surviving the 1987 murder spree carried out by the Sweet Sixteen Killer, where three of her classmates lost their lives. The plot takes an interesting turn when tragedy strikes the Hughes family and Jamie sets out to make things right. The only problem is that the Sweet Sixteen Killer resurfaces and becomes fixated on Jamie, leading to a thrilling altercation that sends her back in time to 1987. Now, Jamie must navigate the past, avoid the killer, and change the course of events to secure a better future.

One of the refreshing aspects of Totally Killer is its authentic depiction of the 1980s. The film avoids the exaggerated costumes, hair, and sets commonly found in nostalgia pieces, allowing viewers to truly immerse themselves in the era. However, notable references to Back to the Future are present, but they are skillfully incorporated without being overwhelming or cliché.
The film’s heart, along with Kiernan Shipka’s brilliant performance, contributes significantly to its success. Shipka’s portrayal of Jamie, an earnest teenager caught in extraordinary circumstances, resonates with the audience and adds depth to the story. Additionally, Julie Bowen and Lochlyn Munro deliver captivating performances, despite their limited screen time. The reunion of Riverdale and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina actors further enhances the viewing experience.
While Totally Killer doesn’t revolutionize the slasher genre, it offers an enjoyable movie experience. The film pays homage to its predecessors while maintaining its own unique story and emotional throughline. It balances suspense, humor, and heartfelt moments, making it suitable for various audiences. However, younger viewers should be aware that some of the kills may be too intense for them.
