The latest Call of Duty release, Modern Warfare III, has arrived. In this review, I will discuss my experience playing the game. The game sees Vladimir Makarov assume leadership of the Russian ultra nationals after the fall of Russian-backed Iranian forces. Makarov stages a prison break to regain command of the Konni group and continue his efforts to trigger World War III using chemical warheads. The game features a cat & mouse experience between Makarov and task force 141, deploying series favorites (Price, MacTavish, Ghost, Farah, and Gaz) on various missions to thwart Makarov.
The campaign, roughly 6 hours long, is divided into segments and acts, taking players through linear/open locations such as London, Sierra Leone, Germany, France, India, and Russia. Sledgehammer Games has implemented the Open Combat experience, allowing players more freedom in their approach to mission objectives. Players can choose to go all guns blazing, take a stealthy approach, or opt for sniping from afar in larger areas. The campaign also features advanced military technology like spotter drones, adding to the overall gameplay experience.
Visually, the game is impressive, with crisp environments, realistic weapons, and well-implemented lighting effects and character models. The shooting mechanics remain satisfying, and players can expect a familiarity factor with the same guns, gear, and attachments as the previous year’s game. However, at only 5-6 hours, the campaign feels short and rushed, lacking depth.
Multiplayer
Modern Warfare III offers a visually updated collection of beloved maps and an entirely new open-world Zombie mode, recycling C0D’s Warzone Battle Royale format by placing a squad of 3 players in a large zombie-infested Urzikstan map. Rounds can take up to 45 – 60 minutes. With its increased level of danger and greater rewards, the mode feels refreshing. Players can also complete side missions called Contracts, which award bonus experience and large amounts of zombie mode currency. One big change-up in the game is the melding of equipment being pseudo-perks, giving players the ability to customize their loadouts with different perks.
Multiplayer also includes a new 3v3v3 feature called Cutthroat, adding more tension and encouraging more careful tactics. Overall, the multiplayer component is an enjoyable online experience, with lots of modes and options to explore.
