How to upgrade the Vivarium and unlock more biomes

After playing a while you gain access to the Vivarium in Hogwarts Legacy, allowing you to store and manage beasts from across the game world. However, it does seem a bit limited, right? The biome you unlock, a gorgeous grassy field, can only contain 12 beasts at a time. With so many out there, it’s tough to pick and choose. But, really, you don’t have to. There is more to the Vivarium, and this guide will explain. Here’s how you can upgrade the Vivarium and unlock more biomes in Hogwarts Legacy.

Hogwarts Legacy: How to upgrade the Vivarium and unlock more biomes

You gain access to the Vivarium after making some progress in the campaign. Once you complete the quest, ‘The Elf, The Nab-Sack, and The Loom,’ you’ll gain your first Vivarium biome. But you can upgrade your Vivarium and get new biomes in Hogwarts Legacy by continuing on in your journey. Once you finish up with your first Astronomy class, unlocking Astronomy Tables in the World Map, and the High Keep mission, you’ll have the chance to work with Deek on a side quest.

The quest is called ‘The Plight of the House-Elf,’ and starting it will open up some whole new worlds. When you speak with Deek about his request, the Room of Requirement will automatically open the next biome: a beautiful coastline with impressive rock formations. You don’t even need to finish the quest to gain access; you can check it out before moving on. Biomes should also be explored a bit. In some hidden-away places, you may find some leeches to squeeze and sacks containing Vivarium decorations.

However, I do suggest finishing Deek’s quest, because you’re not done upgrading your beast pens. After completing the quest, and later the Charles Rookwood Trial quest, Deek will reach out to put you on ‘Foal of the Dead.’ Once more, a new biome will open, and this time it’s a swamp. You have one more upgrade and biome, however, once Deek requests you take the ‘Phoenix Rising’ side quest. Deek’s final quest unlocks the fourth and final biome: the mountains.

Vivarium upgrades to consider

Taking care of your beasts can be a strenuous job. To make things easier on your young witch or wizard, you should consider purchasing some handy equipment. With the Vivarium unlocked, travel to Hogsmeade and visit the Tomes and Scrolls shop. The shop owner carries an array of useful tools, such as a Beast Feeder and a Breeding Pen. For the chemists out there, consider picking up the Dung Composter to turn beast dung into fertilizer to improve your magical plant yield.

Vivarium equipment can be summoned to biomes using conjuration magic, and cost moon stones. You can even build fences and add other decorations. The beach is your oyster, so to speak.
