FFXIV Hatching-Tide Event Guide

Easter is upon us! And what better way to celebrate the occasion than with FFXIV’s Easter-themed event, the Hatching-Tide? Besides egg-themed decorations and puns, you’ll be dealing with Tonberry’s shenanigans.

Who doesn’t know Tonberry? He’s one of the most iconic characters in the whole lore of Final Fantasy. He’s an enemy feared by many, and rightfully so, considering how much damage his cute little Chef’s Knife can do. However, if you put up with his antics during the Hatching-Tide event, you can bag some adorable (but borderline creepy) Tonberry glamour gear! In this guide, I’ll be going over this unique seasonal event and what rewards you can get for it.

Get Along and Play Knife

Let’s go over the requirements for the event real quick. First, your character must have completed the Main Scenario Quest ‘It’s Probably Pirates.’ And second, you’ll need to be at least level 15 to be eligible for the Hatching-Tide event. If you’ve ticked those requisites off, head to Gridania and interact with quest NPC Jihli Aliapoh. She can be found in Old Gridania on the right side of the stage at Mih Khetto’s Amphitheatre (X:10.2, Y:9.4). From there, you can start the ‘Get Along and Play Knife’ quest.

This quest will task you to dress up as a Tonberry and deal with some Slyphs. After the cutscene ends, talk to Hamlyn—who can be found next to Jihli—to equip a Tonberry outfit. Should you lose it, you can reapply this transformation buff by talking to Hamlyn again.

Now, there are three Slyphs for you to scare off, which you can find in these locations:

  • Wily Whiner – X:10.8, Y:8.2
  • Excited Amphibian-lover – X:11.5, Y:9.1
  • Unsure Accomplice – X:11.9, Y:8.6

You can find the Wily Whiner down the path to Apkallu Falls, just right of the Mih Khetto’s Amphitheatre. The first Slyph can be found hovering there. For the last two Slyphs, they’re behind you across the bridge. You’ll find two NPCs discussing something with each other. Once you pass them, turn around and walk right off the cliff. The two Slyphs can be found just below it.

After you scare them, return to Hamlyn, then talk to Jihli to finish the final steps of the quest. Completing ‘Get Along and Play Knife’ rewards you with 1440 EXP and 286 Gil.

Chaos, Carnage, Eggs

The second quest of the event, ‘Chaos, Carnage, Eggs’, will send you to Central Shroud to complete a special event FATE. The fastest way to reach Central Shroud is by teleporting to Bentbranch Meadows, the closest Aetheryte.

The ‘Don’t Be Slyphish FATE’ automatically spawns every eight minutes, so you might have to wait a while to start if you didn’t make it in time. You’ll know it’s about to spawn when you hear a sound effect of a large crowd playing. Click the ‘Join FATE’ button in the quest list. In doing so, you’ll be transformed into wearing the Tonberry costume again.

Your task is to collect Archon Eggs and deliver them to Hamlyn, who can be found nearby. You have to collect the eggs that spawn on the ground while the Slyphs and giant Mammet will try to stun you with their lightning attacks. Since a lot is happening, you’ll need to watch your step, as being hit by one of the AoEs can immobilize you for a few seconds.

To scare them off, you can pick up the Archon Eggs using the “Frighten” action on Suspect Slyphs. This is the only ability you can use while you’re transformed. Be sure to turn your eggs in to Hamlyn before the FATE concludes to get credit for participating. The number of Archon Eggs you’ll need to give out depends on how many players are doing the FATE. If you’re partying up with other players, getting a full contribution for the quest is easier.

When the FATE is over, return to Jihli to conclude the quest. As a reward, you’ll get some Special Midnight Archon Eggs Ballroom Etiquette – Unnerving Undulations item, which unlocks the Frighten emote.

Unlocking the Tonberry Outfit & Other Items

You’re probably thinking about what you will do with the Special Midnight Archon Eggs you just got, and to answer that question, there’s a purpose to them. These are the currency used to unlock a Tonberry outfit, plus a few other curiosities. To trade these eggs, go to the Dreamer NPC in Old Gridania (X:10.3, Y: 9.1).

Here’s the price list of all the pieces of the Tonberry outfit, as well as the other rewards you can obtain:

RewardPrice
Tonberry Head2 Eggs
Tonberry Hands2 Eggs
Tonberry Body2 Eggs
Tonberry Culottes2 Eggs
Tonberry Boots2 Eggs
10x Magicked Prism1 Egg
Hippity-hoppity Hatching-tide Advertisement Wall-mounted Furnishing2 Eggs
Pa-Paya Demastered Orchestrion Roll3 Eggs

You can repeat the FATE as often as possible while the seasonal event remains active. That way, you can earn enough eggs to get all the rewards. The FATE rewards players with about five Special Midnight Archon Eggs on average, so you’ll need to repeat it at least four times to get enough eggs in the basket.

As is the tradition with events in Final Fantasy XIV, all the furnishing items, clothes,  and emotes from the Hatching-Tide will become unavailable once it concludes. You’ll only be able to purchase them using real money once they become available in the online shop in 2024. You’ll essentially be waiting for a whole year to have the chance to get these items again—and not for free—so you might as well grab them now.

When Will the Hatching-Tide Event End?

The Hatching-Tide event for FFXIV started on March 27 and is set to end on April 10, so don’t miss out on its seasonal rewards before it goes away for good. Seasonal events are the norm in the MMO industry, and Final Fantasy 14 is no exception. While they’re typically short, they’re always an excellent way to get free cosmetics for your character.

If you love those cute but deadly Tonberrys, you can walk around the Amphitheatre area and talk to several Tonberry NPCs there. There’s the Gleaning Tonberry, who you might know as Erenvill from the base Endwalker expansion. You can also find the Mooning Tonberry and Too-beautiful Tonberry from the Weaver questline. You could even talk to the Suspect Tonberry NPC, a glamoured Slyph in disguise who simply wants to enjoy the festivities without causing any trouble.
