Day of the Devs, Double Fine’s annual event, offered gamers a sneak peek at new and upcoming indie titles. True to form, this year’s live stream was an impressive showcase of several unique games that span different genres and styles.
Beastieball
Have you ever thought of Pokemon playing volleyball instead of battling? Beastieball is a turn-based RPG with an open world where you can befriend monsters called Beasties and recruit them to your team. Beasties gain access to different abilities depending on their relationship with one another, making it a game that requires strategy and teamwork.
Hyper Light Breaker
Hyper Light Breaker by Alx Preston is a game we can’t wait to play. We first featured it in our Diablo IV issue, but the Day of the Devs live stream gave us new gameplay footage and commentary from the creator. The game will enter early access later this year.
Simpler Times
Simpler Times is a game by a Transylvania-based developer about the relaxation of leaving your childhood home and packing for your next stage of life.
Viewfinder
Viewfinder is a game that offers a unique perspective-shifting gameplay experience. Despite being familiar to some, the extended live stream coverage gives us a better idea of how the story unfolds.
Hauntii
Hauntii is an intriguing game where you play as a ghost who can haunt different objects to progress and solve puzzles. Day of the Devs initially reached out to the developers to feature their game in the show, and from what we can see, it offers impressive visuals and art design.
Cart Life
Cart Life was a game about characters starting their cart-based businesses, which was taken offline by its creator in 2013. However, the game is making a comeback with added content and will soon be released on new platforms.
Helskate
Helskate is an exciting hybrid between a roguelike game and a skateboarding game where you do tricks and melee attacks to progress through levels. From one of the game’s designers who also worked on Tony Hawk’s Underground, we are looking forward to playing this interesting combination of genres.
Henry Halfhead
Henry Halfhead is a puzzle-solving game where you progress by taking control of different objects. It is similar to Hauntii in that sense, but the new footage offers a glimpse of how the game differs from its inspiration.
Cocoon
The creators of Limbo and Inside are behind Cocoon, a game that follows a similar aesthetic. The game is about using orbs to move between worlds, making it a unique puzzle game that is both appealing visually and mentally.
Été
Été, which means summer in French, takes place in the summertime in Montréal. The game allows players to explore the city as a painter and covers it with color to progress. We already see some similarities with the 2012 puzzle game, The Unfinished Swan, but it looks like it is developing into its gameplay mechanics.
Summerhill
The creators of Alto’s Adventure and Odyssey’s endless runners come back with something entirely new. Summerhill retains the same visual appeal of the previous games while adding something different into the mix – a puzzle game about herding sheep.
Eternights
Eternights is a post-apocalyptic game about teenagers navigating life and love while fighting for survival. It is an action game with an impressive visual style and genre mash-up.
Retro Gadgets
Retro Gadgets is about making gadgets and how its art style is charming and innovative.
Mars First Logistics
Mars First Logistics offers a physics playground where players have to create vehicles to move objects around the Red Planet. Despite resembling the vehicle building from Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, it looks like it will offer its unique challenges and gameplay.
Saltsea Chronicles
Saltsea Chronicles is an ingenious narrative-driven game about the crew of a ship trying to find their captain. The game features decision-making elements as you navigate the ocean, encounter unique island locals and explore the vast sea to solve the ultimate mystery.
The Day of the Devs live stream for Summer Games Fest showed us a variety of games that offer entertaining and innovative gameplay, visuals, and story. We can’t wait to see what these titles will ultimately offer when they release.
