Kabam has announced that its first cross-platform game, King Arthur: Legends Rise, will soon enter open beta in a number of countries including the US, Australia, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, the Philippines, and Hong Kong. Based on Arthurian legend, the RPG will run on the Unreal 5 Engine and is set to launch on PC and mobile later in the year. The company hopes the launch will help it re-establish after a recent period of restructuring following layoffs of around 7% of their total workforce at the end of 2022, with a further 12% laid off earlier this year.
Cross-Platform Gaming
Being Kabam’s first cross-platform title, King Arthur: Legends Rise will join the ranks of other cross-platform games like Marvel Snap and long-term titles such as Hearthstone. The advantage of crossplay for customers is the ability to play with their friends on any device, and for developers, it enables easier capitalisation on playtime. Kabam has recently spoken about the importance of crosstech, with CEO SeungWon Lee saying, “As we look to the future, enabling our players to experience cross-platform progression and play is an essential part of what we want to offer our players. King Arthur: Legends Rise represents the first game for this new direction.”
The upcoming RPG provides Kabam with the opportunity to break with their norm of basing games on pre-existing intellectual property, such as Disney for Mirroverse and Marvel for Contest of Champions. With high-quality graphics and cross-platform compatibility, King Arthur: Legends Rise may even become Kabam’s first franchise. Fans can pre-register to join the open beta on June 29.
