Secret Invasion: Episodes 1 and 2 Review

The first two episodes of Secret Invasion, set to premiere on Disney+ on June 21, offer a refreshing change of pace for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Unlike the recent focus on cosmic storylines and multiverse projects, this series takes a step back into the shadows of Earth, presenting an espionage thriller with shades of 1980s Cold War paranoia.

The show centers around Nick Fury, played by Samuel L. Jackson, who finds himself at a disadvantage against a rebel faction of shapeshifting Skrulls. These Skrulls, led by Kingsley Ben-Adir’s Gravik, operate undercover among regular people and those in positions of power. Just like the Flag Smashers in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, they have sympathetic motives, driven by their unfulfilled promise of a new home after the events of Captain Marvel.

While the show effectively creates a sense of hopelessness and desperation for both Fury and the Skrulls, it falls short in delivering the necessary levels of fear and excitement. One concern is the lack of authentic tension regarding the central premise that any human could be a Skrull. With the majority of the core cast already confirmed as Skrulls, there are very few characters left to be revealed as imposters. Furthermore, the absence of superheroes from the original comic book story raises doubts about the show’s ability to replicate the weight and impact of its source material.

However, despite these shortcomings, the first two episodes showcase several strengths that make Secret Invasion worthy of investment. Samuel L. Jackson shines as the lead, portraying a Nick Fury who has lost his cool confidence and grapples with a crisis of faith. His nuanced performance adds complexity to the character and elevates the show. Olivia Colman’s portrayal of MI6 agent Sonya Falsworth brings humor to the story, albeit with a dark and threatening twist.

While action is somewhat restrained in these early episodes, the gritty and textured style employed by director Ali Selim gives the show a premium quality. The absence of over-the-top CGI and glossy visuals sets Secret Invasion apart from traditional superhero-led MCU stories and reinforces its tonally different approach.

Overall, Secret Invasion offers a refreshing change of pace within the MCU. While it may not fulfill all the expectations of delivering fear and excitement, the show has enough strengths to captivate audiences and keep them invested in the story that unfolds.
