Arc System Works has announced that it will be releasing River City: Rival Showdown, its 3DS open-world RPG brawler, on Nintendo Switch in Japan on October 12, 2023. While a western release has not been confirmed yet, fans are eagerly anticipating the possibility.

The news was confirmed in this week’s issue of Weekly Famitsu, with reports from Ryokutya2089 and Gematsu. River City: Rival Showdown was originally created as part of the Kunio-Kun series’ 30th-anniversary celebrations. It is a remake and reimagining of the third game in the series, River City Ransom, and features multiple story paths, endings, and an open-world setting.

The 3DS version of River City: Rival Showdown was released in the west in 2017 and received positive reviews. In fact, our own review gave it a score of 8/10, stating:

“…between the meaty campaign and the fun side mode, River City: Rival Showdown will likely hold your attention for some time.”

The 3DS version included a two-player local co-op mode and a bonus Double Dragon fighting game. Both of these features will also be included in the Switch version, titled Fighting of Double Dragon 2023.

While a western release date has not yet been confirmed by Arc System Works, fans are hopeful that it will be announced soon. In the meantime, fans who have played the 3DS version are sharing their thoughts in the comments.
