The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5: A True Evolution in Foldable Phone Technology
After several iterations of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold, the fifth installment finally brings true innovation to the table. Unlike its predecessors that focused on minor improvements, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 is a foldable phone/tablet hybrid that offers a truly usable experience. With a slimmer design and a revolutionary hinge mechanism that allows the phone to fold completely flat, this device is a game-changer. In this preview, I will share my initial impressions of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5, based on a limited hands-on experience. A full review will follow once I have had the opportunity to test it in a real-world setting.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 – Design and Features
At first glance, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 bears a resemblance to its predecessors. It has a long and narrow form factor that unfolds into a tablet, with a stunning AMOLED display in both configurations. In tablet mode, it boasts a 7.6-inch QHD display, which folds down to a more pocketable 6.2-inch display. Unlike previous models, the outside display has been enlarged, making it easier to use without turning the device into a cumbersome tablet.
The most notable difference, however, lies in the hinge design. Previous Fold models left a gap between the two halves when folded, resulting in dust and dirt accumulating and potentially scratching the screens. Samsung addressed this issue with a new hinge that not only has fewer moving parts but also allows the device to fold completely flat. Additionally, the Fold 5 features new glass, with the outside screen incorporating Gorilla Glass Victus 2, the same material used in the Samsung Galaxy S23. With these enhancements, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 promises increased durability compared to its predecessor.
The device is available in three color options: Icy Blue, Phantom Black, and Cream. While more vibrant color choices would have been welcome, the smaller Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 offers a bit more variety in this regard. Although my experience with the phone has been limited to a Samsung event, it appears to be much more portable than its predecessors. I am eagerly awaiting the opportunity to spend more time with it. With its large and beautiful screen, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 is sure to offer an incredible gaming experience, especially with its impressive brightness of 1,750 nits.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 – Camera
Equipped with a three-camera array, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 excels in the photography department. The standout feature is its 50MP wide-angle camera, which produces stunning results. I took the camera for a photo walk in Midtown New York, and the images it captured were simply incredible. Regardless of the subject, my photos turned out bright and vibrant, surpassing even those taken with a mirrorless camera by my partner. Flowers in macro shots burst with color, while skyscrapers near Bryant Park appeared absolutely stunning. Samsung has always delivered exceptional cameras with its flagship phones, but the Galaxy Z Fold 5 takes it to a whole new level, making me want to photograph everything I see.
Even the zoom capabilities are impressive. While the software allows for up to 60x zoom, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 features a 3x optical zoom, capturing detailed photos from a distance. Compared to the iPhone 14, known for its photography prowess, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 is a significant improvement in every aspect.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 – Specs and Performance
Powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, a slight upgrade from the previous generation, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 offers improved gaming performance and battery life. Although I was unable to test third-party software during my hands-on experience, the device is undoubtedly capable of running any game on its massive 7.6-inch inner display. Playing Genshin Impact was a breeze, and I eagerly look forward to further testing the device in my daily life.
