How to leave the Underdark and finish Act 1 in Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3)

Baldur’s Gate 3: A Step-by-Step Guide to Exiting the Underdark and Finishing Act 1

If you’re playing Baldur’s Gate 3 and want to progress to the Moonrise Towers, you’ll need to find your way out of the Underdark. It can be quite challenging, but fear not! Follow this step-by-step guide to successfully leave the Underdark and complete Act 1.

Important Note: Before you proceed with the steps in this guide, make sure to wrap up any unfinished quests as you won’t be able to return. It’s also recommended that you check out our Find the Nightsong quest guide and make a decision between the Myconids or the Duergar.

Step 1: Reach Underdark – Beach

Once you’re in the Underdark, your first task is to make your way to the Underdark – Beach region. This area is located in the western part of the Underdark. Head north through the Myconid Colony, then west towards the Sussur Tree, and finally south to reach the Beach.

Pro Tip: If you’re feeling adventurous, take a detour and search for the three Icy items to create one of the best early weapons in the game.

Step 2: Use the Underdark Duegar Boat

When you reach the Beach, you’ll encounter a couple of Duegar Dwarves. You can either ambush them or choose to side with them to unlock the Find the Missing Boots sidequest. It’s recommended that you eliminate the main Duegar Dwarf first to avoid facing additional enemies.

Once you’ve dealt with the Duegar Dwarves, hop on the Underdark Duegar Boat to proceed to Grymdark.

Step 3: Acquire the Moonlantern from Nere

Baldur's Gate 3 Moonlantern

Upon arriving at Grymdark, you’ll encounter more Duegar Dwarves who are mining for precious metals. Your objective is to locate Nere, who can be found in the camp south of the Underdark – Grymdark fast travel point. However, Nere may not be present initially. If you can’t find him here, continue south through Underdark – Ancient Forge until you reach the Adamantine Forge.

At the Adamantine Forge, you’ll have the opportunity to craft powerful weapons and armor using the forge, Mithral, and Moulds. To access the forge, you’ll need to defeat Grym, the boss guarding it. Refer to our guide for strategies on defeating Grym, as it’s a tough battle.

When you return to Underdark – Grymforge after dealing with the Adamantine Forge, you may find that all the Duegar Dwarves, including Nere, have been killed. In that case, you can loot Nere’s body to obtain the rare Moonlantern. Also, don’t miss out on Nere’s Disintegrating Night Walkers boots, highly recommended for their Misty Step spell and resistance to being caught and slipping.

Take your time to defeat Grym and utilize the Adamantine Forge before looting Nere’s body.

Step 4: Take the Elevator to Exit the Underdark and Conclude Act 1

Baldur's Gate 3 Exit Underdark Elevator Location

After completing the previous steps, you might still be searching for a way out of the Underdark. Surprisingly, the solution is right in front of you. Head directly across from the Underdark – Grymdark fast travel point to find an elevator. Descend the stairs, walk through the hall with the boats on your left, climb the stairs, and open the gate. This will lead you to the elevator.

An NPC will stop you at the elevator and inquire if you have a Moonlantern. Fortunately, you now possess a Moonlantern. With everything in order, use the elevator to exit the Underdark and conclude Act 1 of Baldur’s Gate 3. Best of luck in the upcoming sections!
