How to Obtain Mourning Frost, One of the Best Weapons in Baldur’s Gate 3

In the world of Baldur’s Gate 3, Mourning Frost is a highly sought-after weapon that can give you a significant advantage. This powerful two-handed Quarterstaff deals 1d8 Bludgeoning damage and has the Topple effect. With its good range and ability to be wielded by anyone proficient in Simple Weapons, Mourning Frost stands out as one of the best weapons, especially in the early stages of the game.

The true greatness of Mourning Frost lies in its unique bonus ability called Heart of Ice. When you use a spell or cantrip on an enemy, Heart of Ice inflicts Frostbite for one turn. Frostbite is a debilitating status effect that causes additional cold damage over time. By utilizing cold spells and cantrips, Mourning Frost becomes incredibly powerful.

To obtain Mourning Frost, you must craft it yourself by combining three Icy items: Icy Crystal, Icy Helve, and Icy Metal. Here’s a guide on how to find each of these items:

Finding the Icy Crystal

The Icy Crystal can be found on Filro the Forgotten, located in the northwest side of the Underdark near the Sussur Tree fast travel point. You have two options for obtaining the Icy Crystal. You can either carefully sneak past the Hook Horrors and pickpocket the crystal from Filro the Forgotten or engage in battle and defeat the miniboss to loot the crystal from his body.

Finding the Icy Helve

The Icy Helve can be found in the Underdark Fort near the Selunite Outpost entrance. It is guarded by a Spectator, but you don’t necessarily have to defeat the boss to obtain the Icy Helve. Instead, you can defeat the Dhourn from a distance and retrieve the Icy Helve from its body when the coast is clear.

Finding the Icy Metal

The Icy Metal is located in the Myconid vault, which can be found in the north section of the Myconid Colony. To access the vault, you may need to use spells like Misty Step or Gaseous Form to bypass the roots blocking the way. Inside the vault, you’ll find the Icy Metal on a Drow body.

Once you have acquired all three Icy items, open your inventory, right-click on each item, and select “Combine.” This will create the powerful Mourning Frost! With this weapon in your hands, you’ll be well-prepared to take on the Forge boss, Grym.
