The Best Rogue Subclasses in Baldur’s Gate 3

Each Rogue subclass offers a unique set of abilities and playstyle options. One of the initial characters you encounter, Astarion, already specializes in assassination. This gives you the freedom to choose a different subclass that aligns with your preferred approach to the game. In Baldur’s Gate 3, the world is fraught with danger, so it’s important to consider your playstyle and select the Rogue subclass that complements it best.

1. Thief (Best Rogue Subclass)

The Thief subclass gives you access to the powerful ability called Fast Hands, which allows for an additional bonus action. Additionally, the Second-Story Work ability can be useful in certain situations.

Choosing the Thief subclass allows your Rogue character to maximize their potential, especially outside of combat scenarios. If you have an Urchin background and proficiency in Sleight of Hand, you’re already off to a great start. Moreover, at level nine, you can unlock the Supreme Sneak ability, which lets you turn invisible during battles. This subclass is perfect if you prefer a patient and stealthy playstyle, launching deadly attacks from the shadows. However, it may be less effective if you prefer to stay in the open. But then again, why play a Rogue if that’s your style in the first place?

2. Arcane Trickster (Good Rogue Subclass)

The Arcane Trickster subclass provides the Mage Hand cantrip as its first ability, making it a great fit for those who enjoy trickery and deception. Additionally, you get to choose two more cantrips and three spells (including one level one Wizard spell), offering a wide range of options. Useful cantrips include Friends and Minor Illusion, while offensive options like Fire Bolt and Poison Spray are also available. As for spells, Disguise Self and Sleep suit a sneaky approach, while powerful Wizard spells like Magic Missile and Expeditious Retreat are included as well.

At level four, the Arcane Trickster gains an additional spell, and at level nine, the Magical Ambush skill is unlocked. Most of the important abilities of this subclass are acquired early on, making it a good choice for multiclass characters.

3. Assassin (Okay Rogue Subclass)

The Assassin subclass is ideal for players who prefer a combat-oriented playstyle. The Assassinate: Initiative ability is particularly effective against enemies who have not yet moved during a battle. Similarly, the Assassinate: Ambush ability ensures that any successful attack against a Surprised enemy is a Critical Hit. The Assassin’s Alacrity ability allows you to respond quickly at the start of a battle. While these abilities are useful, it’s worth noting that Astarion, one of the initial characters, already possesses them early in the game. Therefore, if you want a different flavor of Rogue, you may want to consider exploring other subclasses.

Once you reach level nine, regardless of the subclass, your Rogue character sees significant development and gains the Infiltration Expertise ability. This skill allows you to change your appearance until the next long rest.

We have ranked the Rogue subclasses above, but it’s important to remember that any subclass can be a good choice depending on your preferred playstyle. Choose the subclass that best aligns with your preferred approach to the game. And if you ever change your mind, our guide on how to respec your characters can provide valuable assistance.
