Baldur’s Gate 3 – Ranking the Best Cleric Subclasses
When it comes to choosing a subclass in Baldur’s Gate 3, the Cleric class offers a wide range of options. While most classes have three subclasses to choose from, the Cleric class has seven. In this guide, we will rank the seven Cleric subclasses in Baldur’s Gate 3 from best to worst.
1. Life Domain
As the purest form of a Cleric, the Life Domain subclass excels in healing. The Disciple of Life ability enhances your healing magic as you level up, improving the Cure Wounds spell and granting Heavy Armour Proficiency. This allows you to provide healing support without sacrificing your ability to attack. At higher levels, your healing abilities become even stronger and you gain access to the Revivify spell to revive fallen allies.
2. Tempest Domain
For those who prefer a more offensive playstyle, the Tempest Domain is a great choice. With abilities like Wrath of the Storm which deals lightning damage, the Thunderwave spell, and Fog Cloud for stealthy approaches, this subclass offers versatility. It also grants Martial Weapon Proficiency and Heavy Armour Proficiency, enabling you to remain a formidable threat in battle.
3. War Domain
The War Domain subclass is perfect for Clerics who want to focus on offense. With Heavy Armour Proficiency and Martial Weapon Proficiency, you can confidently enter the fray. The War Priest ability allows you to make an extra attack at the cost of a charge, and the Divine Favor spell enhances your weapons. While it may not have as many options against certain foes compared to the Tempest subclass, it remains a straightforward offensive choice.
4. Nature Domain
The Nature Domain subclass combines the Cleric’s heavy armour proficiency with abilities associated with the Druid class. With spells like Speak with Animals and Animal Friendship, and the Acolyte of Nature ability that grants a Druid cantrip and the powerful Shillelagh cantrip, you have the ability to attack with ice and locusts at higher levels. However, its focus on healing magic may not be as broadly useful as other subclasses.
5. Light Domain
While the Light Domain subclass loses proficiency with heavier armor, it compensates with powerful light and fire spells. Spells like Daylight and Radiance of the Dawn allow you to deal radiant damage and prevent sneak attacks from stealthy foes. While this subclass aligns with the Cleric’s essence, it may not provide as many advantages as superior options.
6. Knowledge Domain
This subclass enhances spells like Command and adds the Sleep spell to your repertoire. It also grants proficiency in various skills with the Knowledge of the Ages ability. The Knowledge Domain is perfect for controlling and confusing adversaries on the battlefield.
7. Trickery Domain
The Trickery Domain subclass, while lacking strong defensive capabilities, offers unique abilities. Blessing of the Trickster allows you to add stealth capabilities to another party member, and spells like Charm Person and Disguise Self add depth to your Rogue-like Cleric. However, considering the Cleric’s many other options, this subclass may not be the most efficient choice.
While we have ranked the subclasses above, it’s important to note that each Cleric subclass has its own strengths and reasons to give it a try. Choose the subclass that aligns with your playstyle and preferences. And if you ever change your mind, we have a guide on how to respec your characters with a little help from Withers.
