The live action Super Mario Bros. movie is getting a 4K theatrical re-release later this year

The Super Mario Bros. movie is set to make a big comeback in Japan. While it’s not the recent blockbuster featuring Chris Pratt and Jack Black, it is the 1993 live-action film that gained infamy. To celebrate its 30th anniversary, the cult classic known as Super Mario: Goddess of the Demon Empire locally will be re-released in 4K format in Japanese theaters on September 15th, 2023.

At this time, there’s no information regarding an international re-release, but we will keep you updated. Considering the recent success of the animated Super Mario Bros. movie, a sequel seems inevitable. The film has become the most profitable video game adaptation of all time, the biggest animated movie debut ever, and even the highest-grossing film of 2023 so far. Reflecting on the film’s success, Chris Pratt expressed his gratitude and astonishment. He mentioned, “We’re so grateful for the support. It’s really shocking to me how successful that movie’s been. I mean, I expected people would love it the way I was excited about it, but it’s truly multi-generational around the world. People love it. They love Mario… It’s a really fun, funny, cute, heartwarming movie and, god, I can’t believe I’m part of it.”
