Old School RuneScape could soon get sailing as its first new skill, but only if it wins a vote

Old School RuneScape Considers Adding New Skill After Over a Decade

The beloved game Old School RuneScape may be introducing a brand new skill for the first time since its release, but its inclusion is contingent on the community’s approval.

Originally launched in 2013, Old School RuneScape is based on the 2007 version of RuneScape, providing players with a nostalgic experience of the 2000s. At present, free-to-play gamers can engage in 15 different skills including fishing and cooking, while premium members have access to an additional eight skills such as farming and construction. The potential addition of Sailing to the skills roster could be a game changer.

On the official Old School RuneScape website, the developers described Sailing as “a new, open-world utility skill that lets you experience exciting new content only found at sea.” They emphasized that sailing expands the expansive world of Gielinor with new islands, creatures, and mysteries waiting to be unraveled. Players will have the opportunity to build and customize their own ship with upgrades and facilities, enabling them to explore perilous areas of the ocean. For the first time, Sailing allows players to assume the role of a ship captain, command NPC crewmembers, and venture into uncharted waters.

The Old School RuneScape team released a YouTube video detailing the development behind Sailing. Assuming the community votes in favor, players will be able to battle sea monsters, mine minerals, and catch exotic fish while sailing. Additionally, future updates may include expeditions to randomly generated areas and thrilling ocean raids.

In order for Sailing to become a permanent addition to the game, players are required to vote ‘yes’ on the lock-in poll, which poses the question: “Should Sailing be added as Old School RuneScape‘s first new skill?” Fans can find the poll in the game’s interface, and if it achieves a majority, Sailing is estimated to be added to Old School RuneScape by 2024.
