Anime Adaptation of Onimusha: Warlords Coming to Netflix
In a surprising turn of events, Netflix has announced that the 2001 PlayStation 2 video game Onimusha: Warlords and its subsequent sequels will be receiving an anime adaptation. While this may come as a shock to many, considering the franchise’s relative obscurity and lack of current popularity, the decision has sparked curiosity among fans. Interestingly, the anime appears to deviate from the original game, as the trailer does not feature protagonist Samanosuke Akechi. Instead, the spotlight is on Miyamoto Musashi, whose character design is based on the late Japanese actor Toshiro Mifune, just as Samanosuke was modelled after Kaneshiro Takeshi.
The involvement of co-director Takashi Miike adds another unexpected element to the adaptation. Known for his work in films such as Ichi The Killer and Audition, Miike previously directed a film adaptation of the Capcom franchise Ace Attorney.
As someone who recently played and thoroughly enjoyed Onimusha on the Switch, I am excited to see it being brought to life once again. You can read more about my experience with the game here.
The highly anticipated anime is set to make its Netflix debut on November 2.
