Zelda player awarded with $10,000 gold trophy for completing KFC-sponsored speedrun

Fast food chain KFC has recognized a speedrunner’s achievement with a unique gold trophy worth over $10,000.

KFC’s Spanish marketing arm collaborated with the speedrunning community known as Speedrun Espanol to create a competition inspired by the secret “11 herbs and spices” recipe that gives KFC’s original flavor chicken its unique taste. The challenge took place within The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, but instead of battles with bosses or collecting powerful weapons, players had to complete a KFC-themed task.

The challenge, named The Recipe Run, required players to start the game with an empty inventory and make their way to the Bedrock Bistro to speak to a Goron character named Gomo. Gomo, who bears a strong resemblance to KFC’s mascot, the Colonel, tasked the players with collecting one raw bird drumstick and 11 different herbs and spices. Once these items were gathered, the final step was cooking a fried chicken drumstick.

The competition was won by Keuss, a French player who completed the run in just over an hour. You can watch the winning run below:

As a reward for his achievement, Keuss was given the coveted gold trophy in the shape of a chicken leg, which holds a significant value in the five-figure range.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is known for its emphasis on construction puzzles and creative thinking, even in conventional gameplay. However, players have continually found innovative ways to enjoy their favorite games through creative speedrunning. For example, the critically acclaimed RPG Baldur’s Gate 3 by Larian Studios has developed a speedrunning subculture focused on quickly romancing one of the game’s companions.
