Epic Games Implements Age Rating Requirement for Player-Made Content in Fortnite
Epic Games has recently revealed their plans to introduce an age rating system for player-created content in their popular game, Fortnite.
In a post on their creator portal on October 3, Epic announced their partnership with the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC) and stated that the new rating system will be launched on November 14, 2023.
According to Epic, the system will provide “internationally-recognized age and content ratings for all first and third-party playable content”. To comply with the new requirements, all creators will need to complete an IARC content rating questionnaire, available in the Creator Portal starting from October 16.
Epic will review the completed forms and users will receive an age-based IARC rating for their content, ranging from E (Everyone) to Teen, along with region-specific ratings. These ratings will be automatically displayed for the projects creators design in the game’s Creative mode.
Specifically, this rating system will apply to Fortnite’s islands, which are templates within the Creative mode that allow players to build various creations. After the implementation of the new rating system, parents and guardians will have additional options in Epic’s existing Parental Controls settings. They will be able to set age rating limits, block islands with certain ratings, unlock specific islands above the set ratings threshold using a Parental Controls PIN, and enable or disable their children’s ability to design their own games in Creative Mode.
This move by Epic highlights their commitment to empowering families with the necessary tools to make informed decisions regarding the appropriate experiences for their children. Patricia Vance, president of ESRB and chairperson of IARC, praised Epic’s efforts, stating “By implementing the IARC rating system within Fortnite, Epic continues to elevate its commitment to providing families with tools to make informed decisions about which experiences are appropriate for their children. As Fortnite evolves from its Battle Royale roots into a broader ecosystem containing a variety of content from Epic and other creators, it’s especially important that parents have a clear understanding of what their children want to access.”
Last week, Epic Games also announced that the price of V-Bucks, the in-game currency of Fortnite, will increase in multiple countries on October 27. This news comes after the company’s decision to lay off over 800 employees.
