Following The Game Awards, developers have expressed concerns over the short allotted speech time for award winners. Founder and host Geoff Keighley admitted that the winners should have been given more time for their speeches.
At the event, winners had only 30 seconds to deliver their speeches before the music began playing to drown them out. The short time for speeches received criticisms from developers who felt that the ceremony should have allowed winners to express their gratitude and celebrate their hard work.
On the day after the show, Keighley took to Twitter to acknowledge the issue. He agreed that the music was played too fast for award winners and stated that he had asked the team to relax the 30-second rule as the show went on. Although no winners were cut off by the music, Keighley indicated that it’s something that they will address going forward.
Speeches made up only 10 minutes of the three-hour runtime of The Game Awards, with the rest of the time mostly filled with advertisements and trailers for upcoming games. Keighley has not addressed the concerns raised by developers about the balance between time allotted to award winners and advertising at the event, nor has he made a statement regarding the significant number of industry layoffs or the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Palestine.
