Square Enix’s Foamstars Set to Debut on PS Plus in February
Square Enix’s highly anticipated Foamstars is all set to launch next month, exclusively for PlayStation 4 and 5 users who are also PlayStation Plus monthly subscribers.
Foamstars is a 4 vs. 4 online multiplayer game where players take on the role of the titular Fomastars, each possessing varying classes and abilities, in a game called Foamsmash. Unlike traditional shooters, the objective here is to cover opponents with foam and then slide-kick them out of the match. The foam not only affects combat but also alters the arena’s layout by creating hills and walls. Publisher Square Enix has revealed that these dynamics have drawn positive comparisons to the popular game Splatoon.
Plans for Ongoing Support and Season Pass
Following the game’s launch, Square Enix intends to provide ongoing support through seasonal updates for a year. These updates will include additions such as new characters, maps, and modes, with the season pass for each season available at $5.99. At launch, Foamstars will offer three PvP modes – Happy Bath Survival, Smash the Star, and Rubber Duck party. An array of screenshots showcasing the various maps for these modes has been provided.
Additional Gameplay Modes and Features
In addition to competitive multiplayer modes, Foamstars will feature single-player and co-op experiences. Players can indulge in a mission mode aimed at defending Bath Vegas, the fictional city in which the game is set, from waves of “Bubble Beasties.” Furthermore, the athletes will engage in conversations during these modes, effectively highlighting their unique personalities. Weekly, anytime, and season-limited challenges will also be integrated across all modes.
Insights from the Development Team
During a brief conversation with the development team, we inquired about potential Square Enix collaborations, to which producer Kosuke Okatani promptly stated, “Nothing is confirmed yet. We are considering such things, but we would definitely like to have such collaborations. Square Enix has a cast of iconic characters, so it’s pretty exciting what could be possible in the future.” Okatani and the team expressed similar enthusiasm about potential K-pop collaborations, given that the game’s art style and direction are largely influenced by the fashion and music movement.
Release Information
For PlayStation Plus monthly subscribers, Foamstars will be available to add to their game libraries from February 6 to March 4. For non-subscribers, the standalone game will be available for purchase at a price of $29.99. Get ready to immerse yourself in the foam-filled action come February 6.
