Stargate: Timekeepers Review – IGN

The unexpected launch of Stargate: Timekeepers introduced a surprisingly competent stealth tactics game that captured the familiar budget-constrained capers of SG-1’s earlier seasons. Despite an underwhelming story, the vibes and presentation evoked the campy, lighthearted tone reminiscent of the show’s era before “prestige TV.”

Set in the same universe as SG-1 and Atlantis, Timekeepers’ fast-paced plot follows a new adventure, yet fails to provide context for newcomers to the Stargate lore. In fact, it seems tailored for existing fans of the franchise.

The assembled team across Timekeepers’ seven initial missions may feel somewhat two-dimensional in their portrayal, but their abilities mesh together effectively, reminiscent of Mimimi’s excellent Shadow Tactics and Shadow Gambit games.

Each area is a delicate knot I loved picking apart from the edges.

The game allows for various playstyles, from run-and-gun tactics to nonviolent approaches, without necessarily rewarding stealthier strategies. However, the level design and rich alien environments create a satisfyingly challenging experience, keeping gameplay interesting and varied.

The mission intros, formatted like the “Previously on…” recaps from the TV show, add to the experience of playing through an episode of SG-1. Additionally, the clean UI, readable text, and loading screen animations further contribute to the immersion in the Stargate universe.

While the game’s presentation and level design shine, occasional glitches and a lack of rewards for certain playstyles leave room for improvement. Despite these drawbacks, Timekeepers offers an enjoyable and challenging tactical experience for fans of the Stargate franchise.
