Democracy gets a boost in Helldivers 2 with the server cap increased to 700,000 concurrent users by developer Arrowhead. However, players are advised not to get too excited as the surge in popularity is expected to flood the game with online players this weekend.
In a series of posts on Twitter, Arrowhead CEO and game director Johan Pilestedt announced the server cap increase. He mentioned, “We have updated the max CCU cap to 700,000. Unfortunately, we expect the CCU to reach that level. We believe that the wait times will be much more bearable.” Pilestedt also stated, “We might still hit the limit in the future but for now we are above what we have been able to support. We are actively monitoring the situation.”
Helldivers 2 Server Capacity and Player Demand
After its launch, Helldivers 2 has steadily increased its server capacity in response to player demand. The game initially supported 250,000 concurrent players, then increased to 360,000, and most recently to 450,000. Despite these upgrades, long waiting times have become common. Pilestedt addressed the issue by explaining that it’s not just a matter of increasing server capacity; rather, optimizing the backend code is crucial to alleviate the waiting times.
In response to a player query, Pilestedt emphasized, “It’s not a matter of money or buying more servers. It’s a matter of labor. We need to optimize the backend code. We are hitting some real limits.”
A recent patch for Helldivers 2 introduced several fixes to enhance the gameplay experience. One significant tweak is targeted at AFK (Away-From-Keyboard) players, who will now be kicked out to the title screen if they remain idle for 15 minutes. The patch also addresses issues such as game crashes and players getting stuck during certain animations.
For fans eagerly awaiting squad play, now might be a good time to revisit the classic sci-fi film Starship Troopers, which has seen a resurgence in interest lately.
