Balatro Removed from Sale in Some Countries Due to Ratings Issue
LocalThunk’s popular poker-themed rogue-like game, Balatro, has suddenly been pulled from sale in certain countries due to a surprising change in age ratings. Playstack, the publisher, has attributed this issue to an unexpected shift in the game’s rating.
According to a statement released on social media by Playstack, the removal of Balatro from console stores has primarily affected only a few countries. The publisher expressed uncertainty about the exact stores impacted and mentioned its optimism about the game’s continued availability on PC platforms, such as Steam.
Unexpected Age Rating Change Sparks Controversy
The root of the problem lies in an abrupt alteration of Balatro’s age rating, which escalated from 3+ to 18+. Playstack clarified that this revision was prompted by a ratings board’s mistaken notion that the game contains gambling-related content.
Response to Unwarranted Ratings Decision
Although Playstack refrained from explicitly naming the ratings board involved, it is highly likely referring to Europe’s PEGI. Balatro now carries a PEGI 18 rating on Xbox and PlayStation stores, with a warning about gambling content, while being absent from Nintendo’s UK eShop.
The publisher emphasized that Balatro does not promote or endorse gambling activities and underscored the unwarranted nature of the ratings decision. It highlighted the developer’s anti-gambling stance and the absence of any gambling mechanics in the game.
Assurance of Restoration and Gratitude for Fans
Playstack expressed regret over fans’ inability to access Balatro temporarily and assured them of its return to the market, potentially with a temporary 18+ rating until the issue is resolved. The publisher thanked players for their patience and support, acknowledging their passion for the game.
Eurogamer’s Christian Donlan praised Balatro’s innovative approach to poker in a glowing four-star review, describing it as a source of immense pleasure and admiration.
