Review – The Outlast Trials (PlayStation 5)

Introduction: A New Chapter in Horror Gaming

Returning to the fray with a new entry in their landmark horror series: Outlast, Canadian Indie Dev: Red Barrels has taken their harrowing single-player formula and thrown multiplayer into the mix, resulting in a cocktail of white-knuckle terror that can be experienced with friends. Whist horror multiplayer has been dominated by the 4v1 asymmetric layout with games like Dead by Daylight for some time now, The Outlast Trials offers a fresh perspective on a somewhat stagnant genre by offering co-operative ‘trials’ with an emphasis on exploration, all the while being hunted down by the ex-pops of Project Lathe run by none other than the insidious Murkoff Corporation. Following a year of early access on PC, the game released worldwide for both current and last gen consoles on March 5th 2024, and as usual I’ll be covering the time I’ve spent with the PlayStation 5 version of the title; detailing the good, deconstructing the bad, whilst ultimately discussing whether the game is worth your time and effort at the £30.99 price tag (UK PSN Store).

When Outlast released in 2013, it made a significant impact on the horror genre, ushering in a new era of psychological horror. Building on the success of games like Amnesia: The Dark Descent, Outlast popularized the ‘Cat-and-Mouse’ style of gameplay, inspiring many developers to adopt similar gameplay mechanics and environmental storytelling techniques. Following the successful release of Outlast II in 2017, which continued the formula of its predecessor while incorporating more jump scares and gore, The Outlast Trials introduces a fresh twist with co-operative multiplayer gameplay for up to four players. This new entry offers smaller stages with escalating tension levels, promoting teamwork and strategic exploration.

The Outlast Trials, set in 1959 during the Cold War era, places players in the role of a homeless individual lured by the promises of the Murkoff Corporation. The game immerses players in a nightmarish experience, where they must navigate through trials while being pursued by eerie ex-pop characters. The introduction of co-operative multiplayer adds a new dimension to the gameplay, fostering a sense of camaraderie and tension as players strive to overcome challenges together.
