Dustborn is an upcoming narrative title on Xbox, offering an explosive adventure where a group of individuals with extraordinary powers embarks on a journey across a dystopian America to deliver a mysterious package. Christoffer Grav, the Art Director at Red Thread Games, has played a crucial role in shaping the world of Dustborn, focusing not only on its compelling characters and dialogue but also on the distinct graphic novel art style that defines the game’s visual experience.

Initially envisioned with a darker tone by the Creative Director Ragnar Tørnquist, Dustborn evolved to emphasize the interpersonal relationships among the lead character, Pax, and her team. Grav explains, “The art direction was initially a bit gloomy and pessimistic, not cell-shaded or in a comic book style.” However, as the storyline shifted towards a lighter mood centered on human connections, the game’s aesthetics followed suit, incorporating bright colors, a cleaner look, and a vibrant palette that aligns with Grav’s personal comic book-influenced style.

Grav, inspired by the pop aesthetics of the 80s, brought a lively tone to DustbornDustborn.

Set in a dystopian ‘Divided States of America’ driven by Justice propaganda, Dustborn explores themes of human interaction and societal dynamics. Grav draws inspiration from various sources across different mediums, including anime, movies, books, and comics, to craft a rich and engaging visual world for the game.

The game’s cast of characters, led by Pax and her eclectic found family, each contribute their skills, perspectives, and flaws to the narrative, fostering a diverse and inclusive storytelling approach. Grav emphasizes the importance of representation in media, particularly for LGBTQ+ individuals, highlighting the game’s commitment to authentically portraying a wide range of identities and experiences.

Grav and his team strived to create a game that reflects the diversity of the real world, incorporating diverse genders, ethnicities, and sexual orientations to provide a relatable and inspiring experience for players. Through Dustborn, Grav hopes to offer a game that resonates with a wide audience and fosters a sense of inclusivity and representation.

Dustborn will be available on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One on August 20.
