New PS5 shareable links will let recipients join multiplayer sessions without being PSN friends

Sony unveils a new feature for PS5 that allows players to generate shareable links for quick access to multiplayer sessions without the need to be PSN friends first. Once this feature rolls out, players can create links directly on their PlayStation 5 console or using the PlayStation App. These links can be shared as URLs or scannable QR codes on social media or messaging platforms of choice.

In addition, Sony is working on a Discord widget version of the link feature that will dynamically refresh in chat to display the status of the multiplayer session, making it easier for recipients to see if it’s still active and worth joining.

According to Sony’s announcement, the new link feature is intended to complement existing methods of joining a session from within a PS5 game and is consistent for any supported PS5 game. However, a “small percentage” of titles may need an update for seamless session joins.

Furthermore, Sony is also developing a feature to generate a link directly to a player’s PlayStation Network profile, enabling recipients to quickly send friend requests. This feature is expected to launch in the coming months as well.

“These are just a few of the steps we’re taking to make it easier for you to connect with players online and jump into multiplayer sessions together,” Sony states. “We’re committed to ongoing innovation in this space and listening to your feedback, so let us know what you think!”
