PlayStation confirms it’s skipping Gamescom again this year

PlayStation will once again be skipping Gamescom this year, as confirmed by Sony to Eurogamer. The annual gaming convention in Germany is known for being the largest in the world, making it a pivotal date in the gaming industry for developers and publishers to showcase their latest creations.

Sony’s decision to forgo Gamescom in recent years is consistent with their preference for hosting their own PlayStation showcases. This trend will continue in 2024, with a Sony spokesperson stating, “We currently have no plans to exhibit at Gamescom 2024.”

Recently, Sony unveiled some of its upcoming PlayStation titles in a State of Play broadcast. The showcase included exciting reveals such as the remake of Silent Hill 2, 5v5 sci-fi shooter Concord, and a new Astro Bot game appropriately named Astro Bot. Team Asobi studio founder and Astro Bot creative director Nicolas Doucet shared insights about the upcoming release, scheduled to debut on the PS5 this September.

PlayStation is not the only company skipping Gamescom this year. In April, Nintendo also announced its absence from the convention in August.

A spokesperson from Nintendo UK explained, “Gamescom is a fantastic event, and each year we assess whether Nintendo should participate. After thorough evaluation, we have decided not to attend Gamescom 2024. However, players will still have opportunities to experience Nintendo Switch games at other events throughout the year.”
