Microsoft Announces Changes to Xbox Game Pass Subscription
Microsoft has confirmed significant changes to its Xbox Game Pass subscription service, including price increases and the removal of day one releases for its basic tier, leading up to the launch of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 in October.
According to Windows Central, the $10.99/month Xbox Game Pass for Console will be discontinued, with existing members able to continue until their subscription expires. New users seeking a basic tier package will now need to subscribe to Xbox Game Pass Standard, priced at $14.99/month, which will be available from September. This package includes Xbox Live Gold for multiplayer gaming and access to Xbox’s back catalogue, but does not include first-party releases on day one.
Changes to Pricing and Subscription Tiers
Players looking to access day one releases like Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 will need to subscribe to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, which comes with a price increase from $16.99 to $19.99 per month. Additionally, PC Game Pass will continue to offer day one games, but with a price increase from $9.99/month to $11.99/month.
Another notable change is the increase in annual cost for Xbox Game Pass Core (formerly Xbox Live Gold) from $59.99 to $74.99, while the monthly price remains at $9.99. All these pricing adjustments will take effect from September 12th, as reported by Windows Central.
Implications of Microsoft’s Acquisition and Game Releases
Last year, Microsoft acquired Activision Blizzard in a $69 billion deal, leading to speculation about changes in its gaming services. In May, Microsoft confirmed that Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 would be a day one release on Game Pass upon its launch in October.
Despite these changes, Microsoft assured that the game will be playable on Xbox and PC for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, PC Game Pass, and Xbox Game Pass for Console members at launch. However, new subscribers to Xbox Game Pass Standard will not have access to day one releases for games like Black Ops 6.
