If you’re a user of the Switch Online mobile app and have an older device, there are some important changes to be aware of.
As reported by My Nintendo News, the latest version of the app (Version 2.9.0) from Nintendo will no longer be compatible with iPhone models running on operating systems below iOS 15. Additionally, Android users will need to have “Android 8.0 or later” to use the latest version of the Switch Online app. Here’s the official update from Nintendo:
Nintendo: “We have started distributing version 2.9.0 of the smartphone app “Nintendo Switch Online.” With this update, the operating environment has been changed as follows. Operating environment after change: iPhone/iPad/iPod touch with iOS version 15.0 or later, Android device with Android OS 8.0 or later”
This is a standard practice in the gaming industry, with apps like Pokémon GO also phasing out support for older operating systems on mobile devices.
For those unfamiliar with the Nintendo Online app, it is designed to enhance the Switch Online experience by providing game-specific services, including the ability to voice chat during online play. It also supports popular titles like Splatoon 3, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
