Remedy Entertainment, the studio behind the critically acclaimed Alan Wake 2, has made a significant move by acquiring the complete rights to the Control franchise from publisher 505 Games. This acquisition marks a pivotal moment for the studio, as they now have full control over the future of the franchise.
This acquisition includes not only the original Control game but also its upcoming sequel, Control 2, as well as the multiplayer spin-off Project Condor, and any future projects related to the Control universe.
“The Control franchise is at the heart of Remedy,” the studio stated. “With the full rights to Control, Condor, and Control 2 now in our hands, Remedy can make strategic decisions that will drive long-term franchise growth.”
As part of this deal, all previous publishing agreements between Remedy and 505 Games regarding the Control franchise have been terminated. While 505 Games will continue to publish Control until December 31, 2024, they will not retain any future rights or royalties beyond that point.
Regarding the financial aspect of the acquisition, Remedy disclosed that the $18.4 million price tag includes the costs associated with the development of Project Condor and Control 2. The studio will make three cash installments over the next year to complete the purchase.
This acquisition comes in the wake of a restructuring at Digital Bros Group, the parent company of 505 Games, where 30% of staff were laid off to adapt to the evolving market conditions.
